In light of the flourishing development of watercolor in Taiwan in recent years, the Department of Cultural Affairs, Taoyuan City Government thus planned to organize an international grand exhibition, so as to cultivate the public interest in the appreciation of watercolor paintings. In the autumn of 2016, we were tasked to organize "Flowing Water – 2017 Taoyuan International Watercolor Exhibition", with the aim of "the most complete international watercolor exhibition held by the public sector of Taiwan in the history of watercolor". As a result, 32 brilliant watercolor artists nowadays from 11 countries worldwide are invited to throw the event at the Department of Cultural Affairs of Taoyuan with 113 art pieces showcased. In addition, various international masters of watercolor are invited to give demonstrations during the exhibition period to promote the art of watercolor. This shall be an art feast full of academic value as well as historical significance.
A poem by Zhu Xi of Sung Dynasty: "A square pond of half an acre is like a mirror, where the clouds and shades in the sky dance together. Tell me how the water can be so clear? From its source flows the water." This exhibition is named after "Flowing Water", which carries two connotations: One is derived from the property in watercolor, "lively and pure" as well as "dynamic and ever-changing". The other comes from its symbolic meaning of heritage, "the source of all rivers" and "appreciating the source as you drink water". This exhibition embraces the dual meaning, in hopes of introducing the diverse styles of the masters at home and abroad as the source of new talents' inspiration, while stirring up the potential energy of watercolor in Taiwan and eventually converge the flowing water into the research of the art of watercolor.
This exhibition is honored to have Hsin-Tian Liao, Dean of College of Humanities, National Taiwan University of Arts, to write an essay . Hence, the exhibition is divided into various galleries according to the genres given in the essay, along with the descriptions respectively to guide all the art lovers through this extraordinary international watercolor event.
